Civil Engineer II

CROW ENGINEERING, INC. is a multi-disciplined consulting engineering firm serving the mechanical, structural, and civil engineering needs of a diverse range of clients. We specifically have a rich history of serving the wood products, food processing, and cold-storage warehousing industries. Additionally, Crow Engineering can work on all types of commercial and industrial projects. We are a team of professional mechanical, structural, and civil engineers, as well as highly skilled designers and drafters with many years of experience. Job Description:
Crow Engineering is currently looking for a junior-level Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) with 2-5 years of experience in civil design, specifically in site development (stormwater, site grading, roadway design).

The potential candidate will be in a unique position to assist in the expansion of Crow Engineering’s offerings and the position will lead to larger opportunities based on experience, skill level, and individual growth.

Position Summary

Apply manual and computerized drafting methods with a working knowledge of the terms and procedures of the occupation to obtain the desired product. Assignments will be completed utilizing information provided by project managers, project engineers, architectural, or technical services staff under the direction of a supervisor. Ideal candidates would enjoy working in a dynamic setting with a diverse set of clientele and a diverse range of assigned tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Must be well versed in the preparation of construction documents for standard civil (site development) engineering design.   
  • Must be able to work in both a 2D environment as well as utilize 3D or BIM tools to create 2-D drawing products.  Must be fluent in AutoCAD, specifically Civil3D. Familiarity or experience with REVIT also a plus.
  • Must be able to accurately draw from sketches or specifications using appropriate symbology, terms, procedures, and drafting standards.
  • Prepare bills of material, schedules, and assist engineering personnel with formal drawing transmittals and construction issues.
  • Assist project personnel to revise drawings to reflect as-built conditions.
  • Draw civil plans (site plans, grading and stormwater plans, utility plans), diagrams, and profiles, using cross-sections and surveys.
  • Create templates and other standard drawings. Ability to create styles and other template-type components in Civil 3D would be also preferred. Candidate may be tasked with preparing and curating standards and templates.
  • Experience preparing hydrology calculations (rational, SBUH, continuous simulation modeling, or the like) based on the various local and regional jurisdictions.
  • Basic structural design knowledge preferred but a willingness to supplement civil engineering design with structural engineering tasks a bonus for candidate
  • Prepare structural plans and documents for buildings and other structure types.  Plans include foundations, framing, elevations, sections, etc. Draft plans and detailed drawings for structural concrete, steel structures, and installations for various construction projects working from sketches, verbal instructions or notes.   
  • Determine the order of work and method of presentation, such as orthographic or isometric drawing.
  • Review rough sketches, drawings, specifications, and other engineering data received from civil and structural engineers to ensure that they conform to design concepts.
  • Effective communication with the design team to plan, develop drawings, basic design models, and resolve problems.
  • May require travel to plant/job site.

Job Requirements:

  • Must have a working knowledge of the Windows Operating System including email, word processing, spreadsheet, database, and computer-aided drafting applications (AutoCAD and other Autodesk Programs).
  • Bachelor’s degree in drafting/design/engineering technology or equivalent 2-5 years of industry-related civil experience or structural experience.

Senior Mechanical Designer/Engineer II

Summary:

Crow Engineering provides engineering design and consultancy services to its clients in the wood products, industrial, and heavy commercial industries. The senior mechanical designer/engineer II position is responsible for the design of industrial systems required for the operation of sawmills and industrial facilities. Typical system designs would include conveyor systems, ladders, saw systems, material flow equipment, process support design, material handling systems, and other process equipment as required. The individual would be responsible for generating high-quality designs and/or checking other team member’s designs for constructability, manufacturability, ease of installation, and overall quality of the design. The individual would interact with Crow Engineering Project Managers to obtain timelines, scope, and expectations surrounding work. From time to time this individual will interface with key equipment vendors and clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Design Lead Responsibilities:

  • Act as the lead designer for client design requests.
  • Readily takes on client design tasks with little to no supervision or guidance from management.
  • Can accept open-ended tasks and comes up with creative ways to meet the client’s needs.
  • Works to understand the client’s objectives of the project before moving forward with the design.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to ensure client’s needs are being met in a timely, cost-effective, and high-quality manner.
  • Can delegate tasks to designers, drafters, and project managers that are needed to successfully complete the project.
  • Be the ultimate gatekeeper for the safety, reliability, and quality of the design.  This person must be able to be vocal when design attributes may be impacting safety or overall system quality. 
  • Must be able to work under pressure and self-manage their own and other designers/drafters priorities. 
  • Self-validate and defend design methodologies through performing engineering calculations on key process equipment.  Calculations include but are not limited to:
  • Drive/Motor Power Calculations
  • Safety Margins
  • Hydraulic Power Requirements
  • Pump, Piping and Fluid Based Process Capacity Design
  • Other calculations requirements as needed. 
  • Provide a work product that is above average based on industry expectations and has recognized value with our clients. 
  • Creates mechanical designs for material handling, processing, and sorting systems used in the wood products industry.
  • Can handle moderately complicated mechanical design tasks with little to no supervision.

Estimation and Financial Controls Responsibilities

  • Can generate estimates for hours required to complete a design project for engineering, design, and drafting times.
  • Can provide construction level estimates for mechanical design using Crow Engineering estimation tools. 
  • Can proactively have difficult, yet professional, conversations with team members when scope change or issues occur that may impact the financial performance of the project. 

Corporate Responsibilities

  • The position will ensure that design and drafting standards are developed by the designer/drafter team that match our internal and client’s quality standards.
  • The position will work with management to ensure the appropriate checking and quality processes are in place to guarantee a high-quality design, including drafting, is executed by the team. 

Client Responsibilities

  • From time to time, the individual must be able to communicate directly with clients regarding project updates, tasks, and issues.
  • In working at our client’s locations, the employee is responsible for their safety and the safety of those around them. 
  • The employee is responsible for understanding the safety procedures, personal protection equipment, lock-out tag-out requirements, and appropriate emergency response actions required while onsite at our client’s locations.

Qualifications:

  • >7 years of relevant work experience.
  • A technical or engineering degree is preferred but not required.

  • Inventor proficiency is required.
  • Experience with engineering change order and version control systems. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of process-driven manufacturing facilities.
  • Stage gate experience is a plus.
  • Experience taking onsite measurements and constructing “as-built” documentation.

  • Execute design work for conveyors, lumber/log transfers, structural steel, and other basic machinery design.

  • Must be able to document design specifications and customer requirements through interacting with senior Crow staff.   
  • Work closely with Project Managers to ensure client’s needs are being met in a timely, cost effective, and high-quality manner.
  • Must be able to learn the Crow Engineering checking process and check the work of other designer’s designs.  
  • Must be able to work under pressure and self-manage their own priorities.  
  • Must be able to perform basic mechanical calculations to validate designs.  Calculations include but are not limited to:

Senior Structural Engineer

POSITION: SENIOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

Crow Engineering provides engineering design and consultancy services to its clients in the wood products, industrial, and mixed use facilities. The Structural Engineer is responsible for the design of industrial, Cold Storage, Commercial, and High-Density Residential structures for our clients.

Typical projects would include:
Design of new facilities, foundation and piling design and general arrangements for pre-engineered structures, repair and retrofit designs of damaged or aged facilities, seismic upgrades of facilities to meet code requirements.

The individual would be responsible for generating high-quality designs and working with a team of designers and drafters to ensure our client’s requirements are being met.  The individual would interact with Crow Engineering Project Managers to obtain timelines, scope, and expectations surrounding work.  From time to time this individual will interface with key equipment vendors and clients.

The intern position offers a variety of opportunities, including basic engineering tasks that will help you apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to on-the-job experiences.
