Senior Structural Engineer

Job Title:  Senior Structural Engineer
Location: Beaverton, Oregon

Crow Engineering provides engineering design and consultancy services to its clients in the wood products, industrial, and mixed use facilities. The Structural Engineer is responsible for the design of industrial, Cold Storage, Commercial, and High-Density Residential structures for our clients.

Typical projects would include: 
Design of new facilities, foundation and piling design and general arrangements for pre-engineered structures, repair and retrofit designs of damaged or aged facilities, seismic upgrades of facilities to meet code requirements.

The individual would be responsible for generating high-quality designs and working with a team of designers and drafters to ensure our client’s requirements are being met.  The individual would interact with Crow Engineering Project Managers to obtain timelines, scope, and expectations surrounding work.  From time to time this individual will interface with key equipment vendors and clients.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create structural designs, execute calculations, and build specifications for structures utilized in the markets we serve.  
  • Work with local jurisdictions to ensure proper permitting support documentation details are available based on client demands.  
  • Work closely with Project Managers to ensure client’s needs are being met in a timely, cost effective, and high-quality manner.
  • Provide their own project management administration for small to medium sized projects.  
  • Generate construction estimation for projects they are responsible for.  
  • Provide a work product that is above average based on industry expectations that demand a value with our clients.  
  • Can handle moderately complicated structural tasks with little to no direction.   
  • Proactively escalates needs/road blocks to other project team members, project managers, owners, and outside vendors.   
  • Executes design work within AutoCAD, Revit, and structural calculation tool sets.
  • Communicates with key vendors and suppliers to ensure incorporated design parameters are being integrated into the project accordingly.  
  • Ensures revision control is in place and effective when working on client designs.
  • Can help build standards, best-known methods, and training documentation for future new hires.  
  • Can effectively work through difficult situations.

Qualifications:

  • A four-year engineering degree in Civil Engineering.   
  • Candidate must be an actively certified Professional Civil Engineer
  • Candidate must have obtained their Structural Engineering certification or have >7 years of experience as a civil engineer specializing in structural designs.  
  • 3-5 Years work experience in a similar position.  
  • AutoCAD experience, or experience in similar systems to AutoCAD
  • Experience with solid modeling systems is preferred.
  • Client facing presentation skill is highly preferred.
  • Experience with engineering change order and version control systems.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • In-depth knowledge of process driven manufacturing facilities.
  • Proven work experience with generating engineering/FEA calculations and appropriate safety margin analysis in prior positions.

Civil Engineer III

Job Title:  Civil Engineer III

Crow Engineering is currently looking for a Professional Engineer (PE) with 510 years of experience in civil design, specifically in site development (stormwater, site grading, roadway design).  

The potential candidate will be in a unique position to assist in the expansion of Crow Engineering’s offerings and the position will lead to larger opportunities based on experience, skill level, and individual growth.

Position Summary

Apply manual and computerized drafting methods with a working knowledge of the terms and procedures of the occupation to obtain the desired product. Assignments will be completed utilizing information provided by project managers, project engineers, architectural, or technical services staff under the direction of a supervisor. Ideal candidates would enjoy working in a dynamic setting with a diverse set of clientele and a diverse range of assigned tasks. 

Responsibilities:

  • Must be well versed in the preparation of construction documents for standard civil (site development) engineering desig
  • Must be able to work in both a 2D environment as well as utilize 3D or BIM tools to create 2-D drawing products.
  • Must be fluent in AutoCAD, specifically Civil3D. Familiarity or experience with REVIT also a plus.
  • Must be able to accurately draw from sketches or specifications using appropriate symbology, terms, procedures and drafting standards.
  • Draw civil plans (site plans, grading and stormwater plans, utility plans), diagrams, and profiles, using cross-sections and surveys.
  • Create templates and other standard Ability to create styles and other template type components in Civil 3D would be also preferred.    Candidate may be tasked with preparing and curating standards and templates.

The senior project manager position will be responsible for managing client’s projects throughout the southeast.   Typical projects include sawmill, veneer, EWP, plywood, and other heavy industrial modernization projects.  The individual would be responsible for handling projects through their entire lifecycle.  The position must be able to earn the respect of our clients through:  Listening to their challenges, collaborating with their teams, and developing solutions that exceed their expectations.

  • Self manages team design time to ensure the clients resources are being appropriately used for a project.
  • Can generate and communicate construction level estimates for projects.

Corporate Responsibilities

  • This role will be responsible for growing our footprint in the southeast through providing high quality service. While this individual will not be responsible for direct business development and marketing, they will be required to solicit current clients while on a project for additional opportunities and on occasion  travel within the region to support business development activities.
  • This position will need to be able to forecast workload requirements for the extended team and prioritize their work. Any periods of under or overutilization of team resources must be communicated through these forecasts.
  • Crow is looking for a person who can help lead a future team of individuals within the region. This individual will be responsible (in conjunction with a local principal engineer) for hiring local PM, designer, and other candidates within the region that will help Crow build its services network.

Client Responsibilities

  • Individual must be able to communicate directly with clients regarding project updates, tasks, and issues for minor to moderate projects.
  • In working at our client’s locations, employee is responsible for their safety and the safety of those around them.
  • Employee is responsible for understanding the safety procedures, personal protection equipment, lock out tag out requirements, and appropriate emergency response actions required while onsite at our client’s locations.
  • The individual must make the client feel like they are integral into the design. This person must solicit feedback and build relationships at the mills at all levels, from the plant managers to maintenance and operations staff.
  • Must be able to work around our client’s shutdown schedules to obtain critical field information as necessary.

Summary:

The senior mechanical designer/engineer II position is responsible for the design of industrial systems required for the operation of sawmills and industrial facilities. Typical system designs would include conveyor systems, ladders, saw systems, material flow equipment, process support design, material handling systems, and other process equipment as required. The individual would be responsible for generating high-quality designs and/or checking other team member’s designs for constructability, manufacturability, ease of installation, and overall quality of the design. The individual would interact with Crow Engineering Project Managers to obtain timelines, scope, and expectations surrounding work. From time to time this individual will interface with key equipment vendors and clients.

  • Readily takes on client design tasks with little to no supervision or guidance from management.

  • Self-validate and defend design methodologies through performing engineering calculations on key process equipment.  Calculations include but are not limited to:
  • Drive/Motor Power Calculations
  • Safety Margins
  • Hydraulic Power Requirements
  • Pump, Piping and Fluid Based Process Capacity Design
  • Other calculations requirements as needed.

POSITION: Mechanical Designer III

Crow Engineering provides engineering design and consultancy services to its clients in the wood products, industrial, and heavy commercial industries.  The mechanical designer position is responsible for the design of industrial systems required for the operation of sawmills and industrial facilities.   Typical system designs would include:  conveyor systems, ladders, saw systems, material flow equipment, process support design, material handling systems and other process equipment as required.  The individual would be responsible for generating high quality designs and/or checking other team member’s designs.  The individual would interact with Crow Engineering Project Managers and Senior Mechanical Designers to obtain timelines, scope and expectations surrounding work.   From time to time this individual will interface with key equipment vendors and clients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Mechanical Designer Responsibilities

  • Execute design work for conveyors, lumber/log transfers, structural steel, and other basic machinery design.  
  • Can accept moderately difficult open-ended tasks and comes up with creative ways to meet the client’s needs. 
  • Must be able to document design specifications and customer requirements through interacting with senior Crow staff.   
  • Work closely with Project Managers to ensure client’s needs are being met in a timely, cost effective, and high-quality manner.
  • Must be able to learn the Crow Engineering checking process and check the work of other designer’s designs.  
  • Must be able to work under pressure and self-manage their own priorities.  
  • Must be able to perform basic mechanical calculations to validate designs.  Calculations include but are not limited to:
    • Drive/Motor Power Calculations
    • Safety Margins
    • Hydraulic Power Requirements
    • Pump, Piping and Fluid Based Process Capacity Design
    • Other calculations requirements as needed.  
  • Provide a work product that is above average based on industry expectations that demands a value with our clients.  
  • Proactively escalates needs/roadblocks to other project managers and other senior designers.   
  • Ensures revision control is in place and effective when working on client designs. 
  • Can help build standards, best known methods, and training documentation for future new hires.

POSITION: SENIOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

Typical projects would include:
Design of new facilities, foundation and piling design and general arrangements for pre-engineered structures, repair and retrofit designs of damaged or aged facilities, seismic upgrades of facilities to meet code requirements.

The individual would be responsible for generating high-quality designs and working with a team of designers and drafters to ensure our client’s requirements are being met.  The individual would interact with Crow Engineering Project Managers to obtain timelines, scope, and expectations surrounding work.  From time to time this individual will interface with key equipment vendors and clients.
